Integrated Listening Provides Real Results for Autism

Bookmark and Share

As many of you know, I’m a big fan of Integrated Listening Systems (iLs) for several reasons.  First, they provide a useful therapy based on real, tangible research.  Second, the company has a real mission and a real passion for helping our children on the spectrum.  And third, this therapy provides real results!

I’ve been using the iLs system for my son (at home) for about the last six months.  And my son has gained some impressive results during that time.

His ability to process information is much better.  His ability to recall events has improved dramatically.  In fact, he now recounts his day to me (with no prompting) as soon as he gets home from school.  His ability to switch between tasks has definitely improved.  His sound sensitivity is much less of an issue.  He’s able to tolerate seeing a movie at the theater, the annoyance of a fire drill at school and the loudness of flushing toilets in public places – all without covering his ears.

I can talk to him now about why this therapy is so important and the types of benefits and skills he’s gaining as a result.  The only thing it has not helped with so far…wink, wink…is that he still takes things very literally.  I’ll give you an example.

We had just finished his iLs session the other day and he said to me, “Mom, I’m glad we’re doing this music thing, because I don’t have to cover my ears anymore at school.”

I said, “That’s great, honey.  And that’s why we need to keep doing it so your ears will keep getting stronger.”

Then he says, “Are my ears bigger yet?”

I said, “No, I don’t think so.”

And he says, “Well if they’re getting stronger, then they should be getting bigger too!”
